Last Week, our A level English Literature students went to see Brian Friel’s play, Dancing at Lughnasa at The Olivier Theatre in London.

Deputy Head of English, Sarah Whitehead shared some reflections about the production,

“Initially I thought that the domestic subject would not work well in such a large theatre space but the narrator, Tom really drew the audience in, especially at the end when he told us about the fate of his Aunt. The set was excellent, it included a winding path going up a hill which the actors used throughout the production. There was some enchanting dancing – both wild and fun as well as romantic, dreamlike sequences. Friel’s magical script complemented the Irish lilt of the characters – with a different types of lyricism from each character. There were sharp twists in the play, from the ridiculous to the tragic.”
