This term, Year 8 pupils have passed a second Mandarin qualification with flying colours, with many achieving 100%, and the vast majority scoring over 90% in the Global Online Assessment Level 2. This is an impressive set of very comfortable Distinctions, which they fully deserve and should all feel very proud of.

The pupils have turned up consistently to weekly sessions, which take place after school for an hour and a half, demonstrating considerable commitment after an already action-packed school day! It comes as little surprise that almost all pupils have opted to pursue Mandarin when it moves into the curriculum in September.

Here’s what some of our pupils had to say about their Mandarin journey so far:

Kirsten in Year 8 said:

“I have really enjoyed developing my Mandarin knowledge, learning words such as "to be" and "Mrs.". I am looking forward to the next part of my language journey!"

Adam in Year 8 said:

“Mandarin has been very fun and educational. I look forward to improving my speaking, and maybe being able to hold a long conversation with someone who is fluent!”

Phoebe in Year 8 said:

“I have really enjoyed every part of the MFL Mandarin Curriculum. The lessons are fun and engaging and the teachers approach each lesson with such enthusiasm and love of the language. I am really looking forward to taking this beautiful culture and language to Year 9 and hope to continue to GCSE. I am so grateful to be part of the first cohort with this amazing opportunity. Xiexie!”

Amelie in Year 8 said:

“Mandarin has been a new and exciting experience that has really invited us to learn not only a language but a culture, and our eagerness to come to sessions has exhibited this perfectly. Next year, I can’t wait to practise my character writing and expressing myself in the language. Mandarin is difficult, but the rewards are much more gratifying than I ever could have imagined, and I am very glad to be able to continue.”

Joanna in Year 8 said:

“Personally, I have loved being part of this amazing club and have enjoyed learning Mandarin. The curriculum has taught me so much. The teachers take the lessons very enthusiastically and we can tell that they also love the language. Learning about their culture and language has been a wonderful opportunity and has improved my eagerness to learn more languages. Mandarin is a difficult language but a beautiful one and I am so grateful that I got this chance to learn it. Writing the language and learning calligraphy would be my all-time favourite thing about Mandarin and I am very glad that I can continue with Mandarin and learn so much more about it.”
