On Tuesday, a group of Year 12 and 13 students taking AS English Language attended an A Level English Language conference, organised by the English and Media Centre, at Friends' House Euston.

The event was jam-packed with engaging talks and workshops, but some of the highlights included hearing from 'National Treasure' Michael Rosen, a favourite children's writer and Professor of Children's Literature at Goldsmiths. Rosen discussed what constitutes Standard English and explored extracts from Shakespeare, The Guardian and Loyle Carner.

The conference also featured talks from Chris Montgomery about the latest research around regional accents. Montgomery questioned whether we are in danger of losing the distinctions between Northern accents. This interesting debate was followed by Emma Byrne who spoke about the science behind swearing, revealing that it is actually necessary and good for you. This fascinating talk challenged many preconceptions and sparked a lot of discussion.

Overall, the conference was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about the English language and meet other like-minded individuals from across the country.
