Dispelling the Myths around Drugs and Addiction

Thank you to Addiction Counsellor, Simon Leigh, for a powerful, insightful and honest talk about drugs and addiction to Year 9 and Year 10 pupils on 2 February.

In his talk, as part of an extended PSHE session, Simon dispelled the myths that many of us have heard about different street drugs, outlining the facts about each and explaining the chemical and psychological effects to help inform pupils with the facts.

He talked honestly and openly about his own personal journey with a psychological addiction to cocaine and how he hit rock bottom and ended up in rehab. Determined to change his life for his daughter, he said:

“Drugs took me to hell and back but I’m one of the lucky ones.”

Now, 20 years clean, Simon is an Addiction Counsellor specialising in the treatment of addictive disorders.
