To ensure that sustainability is firmly on everyone's agenda, education is key.

Pupils have been looking at environmental issues in a whole variety of ways and across the breadth of the curriculum, including some fascinating projects in Art, Economics, DT and Geography.

Examples include a Year 12 Economics trip to the amazing carbon neutral vertical farm under Clapham Common and a Year 7 Art project exploring the leaching of coral reefs.

We enjoy regular visiting speakers to educate us on both global and local environmental issues. Examples include: interactive sessions led by 8 Billion Ideas - an organisation on a mission to give every student on the planet the skills and motivation to change the world; Marine conservationist, Libby Bowles from Tread Lighter has talked to pupils about cleaning up our oceans; designer Beatrix Ong has enlightened Year 12s on her journey from working at Jimmy Choo to studying great white sharks and working in sustainable design and social causes.

In addition, Alleyn’s teachers Jo Platten (Art) and Julie Franco (Physics) have been steaming ahead and completed the bronze stage of their training on the eduCCate Global course, where they have been learning about Climate change and how to facilitate more schemes of work focusing on the environment and sustainability in a broader range of subjects. They said:

“It's been really interesting to think about climate through the lens of Climate Change and Gender, Cities and Climate Change, Diet and Sustainability, Children and Climate Change and lastly Human Health and Climate Change. We're both looking forward to implementing this into schemes of work across the curriculum.”
