Over 60 schools in London compete in the challenging Hans Woyda Mathematics Olympiad competition. Each team consists of four players: one from Years 7-9, one from Years 10-11, one in Year 12 and one in Year 13. Students compete both individually and in teams, answering questions on geometry, algebra, calculus and mental arithmetic.

On Wednesday our team headed across to Dulwich College to represent our School in this intense competition. Maths teacher, Mr Caffery describes what happened during this high-octane event:

The adrenaline was coursing through our veins tonight! After a rocky start, we were down 17-27 in the first few rounds.

An intense team round challenged students to calculate as many integers as possible from 100-120 by summing different powers of 2 and 3. After intense examination of the results both teams gained a mere 1 point in this round!

The Alleyn's team really shone in the fierce race round where the sighs of Dulwich college boys could be heard across the room as Fermín, Xavi, Aanya and Tara's hands shot into the air.

The game closed at a much closer 39-42 in favour of Dulwich College; we left with high spirits, and I couldn't be prouder of the team.

Practice recommences tomorrow in preparation for our game against St. Dunstan’s next half-term.
