Model United Nations is a simulation of the real United Nations, in which pupils represent a country as a delegate in one of the United Nations committees, and later as a group in the General Assembly. The purpose of each committee, and indeed the General Assembly, is to agree on a resolution that will help to solve a given issue.

We had the great pleasure of welcoming Shami Chakrabarti CBE, PC as our guest speaker at AMUN 2022. She spoke eloquently and persuasively about the plight of refugees, of which there are over 85 million in the world and emphasised the importance of Model United Nations in engaging young people with global issues.

Dr Matthew J Greetham – MUN Coordinator, said:

“Baroness Chakrabarti’s impassioned speech was matched by our young delegates insightful questions and thoughtful comments during the ensuing question and answer session.”

The topics the delegates debated this year ranged from climate refugees and the Israel-Palestine conflict to managing debris in outer space. We had 27 countries represented, 19 of which were from other schools along with 8 from Alleyn’s, competing in our House MUN competition, the results of which will be announced shortly! The quality of debate was outstanding, and even delegates new to MUN got thoroughly involved in the debate and enjoyed the day.

Baroness Chakrabarti commented after attending the conference:

“The students were on top form this morning and their questions were pertinent, challenging but always well-put. They were a credit to all their schools. If only the real UN; or even our own Parliament could be so inspiring”.

High praise indeed for some very talented young diplomats. Watch this space.
