On Monday, 26 September and Wednesday, 28 September, Year 10 geographers donned their wellies and waterproofs and took to the River Tillingbourne.

The field trip to Surrey was a chance for pupils to gain some hands-on experience of collecting data and examining the changing course of a river. Getting into the river at three different sites, the pupils collected data on how river characteristics such as cross-sectional area and velocity can change downstream. They also explored how human action and intervention, including pipes directing water flow away from the precious cricket pitch and into the river channel at Abinger Hammer, have altered these characteristics and the impact these changes have on flood risk.

They also were able to see an oxbow lake scar - a highlight of the trip!

Year 10 pupil Timofey said:

“I enjoyed getting into the river, because it was fun to be doing a physical experiment in the environment, especially when we got to see the horses. I also enjoyed working in my team, because it was better to work with other people, and I got to try every role".
