Bear Pit Theatre – Edinburgh Fringe 2022: Tales of Xenia and How to be Lost
This summer the Alleyn’s Bear Pit Theatre company will be heading back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival after a two-year break (due to Covid), and this time they’ll be taking up two original verbatim, physical theatre shows. Year 12 students will present Tales of Xenia and Year 13 students will be performing How to be Lost.
Both performances will be in the C Aquila in Edinburgh from 22 to 28 August. If you’re heading to Edinburgh this summer be sure to go and watch them and to all the cast and crew – good luck and have fun!
You can follow the Bear Pit Adventure on Twitter at @BearPitTheatre.
Tales of Xenia
The ancient Greeks held the idea of Xenia sacred: it’s the concept of helping strangers, offering hospitality to lost travellers. It’s time to celebrate Xenia again.
In today’s landscape of bleak newsfeeds and toxic algorithms, Bear Pit Theatre went looking for tales of everyday hope and a brighter worldview. With verbatim accounts drawn from war-torn Afghanistan to Soviet Russia, from drunken inter-railing to the friendliest mugging ever, these tales are an antidote to cynicism. We focus on truth and simplicity, merging the words of everyday decency with physical theatre and puppetry in a glorious carnival of optimism.
Year 12 cast and crew: Tom, Priya, Grace, Fleur, Freya, Lily, Anna, Henry, Max and Lucy
Year 12 crew: Zoë (Lighting) and Han (Sound)
Directed by Jeremy Piper, Director of Drama

How to be Lost
With maps on every phone and immediate access to the finest cartography ever produced, it’s hard to get properly lost in the modern landscape. But although terra incognita has disappeared, we all have a tale of losing our way.
Bear Pit Theatre brings you verbatim accounts of misplaced paths and accidental adventures, thrillingly told through physical theatre, dance and puppetry. These are stories of thrill seekers in distant lands, bewildered tourists, wandering children, new beginnings and fleeting bewilderments – of the confusion and transcendence that re-draws trusted maps. Come get gloriously lost with Bear Pit Theatre.
