Spanish Debating

Our two Upper School students, Domitille and Joe, had just two weeks to research motions for the Spanish debate. The motions were bullfighting, abortion and social media and the two only discovered which side they would be arguing a few seconds before the debate.

The adjudicators awarded points based on language and debating skills, and Domitille and Joe finished joint top of their pool after three debates, particularly impressing the judges with the quality of their Spanish. In cases of a draw, a name is pulled out of a hat to decide which team from a pool will pass to the final four, and unfortunately luck was not on our side this time.

We are so proud of Joe and Domitille who had to face teams made up largely of Year 13s. Although it was a nerve-wracking experience, they both thoroughly enjoyed it and the opportunity it afforded them to develop their research skills and spoken Spanish.

Our thanks too, to Zakia, who helped research one of the motions and came along as understudy.
