Alexei in Year 11 and Aanya in Year 9 have excelled in the prestigious second round of the British Mathematical Olympiad.
Before a pupil can take part in the first stage of the Olympiad they have to sit the UK Senior Mathematical Challenge (UKSMC). The highest achievers in the UKSMC, typically just 1,300 pupils across the UK, are then entered for the first round of the British Mathematical Challenge (BMO1), and Alexei and Aanya sat this in November.
Just 100 pupils from across the UK who have sat the BMO1 are then invited to sit the BMO2, and both Alexei and Aanya were amng those selected, so to have reached that stage was a huge accolade for them both. They sat the BMO2, a gruelling three-and-a-half-hour test with four questions, early this year and results have now been published, revealing that Alexei achieved a Merit and Aanya a Distinction.
Aanya is likely to have been one of the youngest in the competition, which is aimed at Years 12 and 13. Her score was in the top 25 in the UK and she will now be invited to join the team of four girls to enter the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, which is due to be held in Georgia in April.
We are bursting with pride for them both!
