Year 3 had a fantastic time at Horton Kirby on Wednesday, deepening their knowledge of rivers, as well as investigating rocks as part of their science topic. We measured the speed of the river, which was impacted by meanders, as well as observing natural levees from erosion. We were fortunate enough to go into the River Darent, which was unusually high for this time of year, due to the levels of rain. The Darent is one of only 180 chalk rivers in the world, so a lot of chalk was found and experimented with! We also found flint in the river and brought some samples home. The sun shone down on us as we had a lovely lunch in the garden before starting our workshop, discussing the impact of flooding and river pollution and thinking how humans have changed rivers in order. We may well have some future river ecologists!
