House teams had less than half an hour this lunchtime to create a vessel that would carry an egg, without it cracking, from the top of the science stairwell to the hard floor of the lobby below.
The teams got cracking straight away, building their vessels from scratch in the time allotted. Dr Moore explained to the groups that their entry would be judged on a number of factors: creativity, sustainability, good calculations, and of course durability combined with velocity (so parachutes were unlikely to win.)
It was a real test of ingenuity and teamwork, as expressed by our Scientists in Residence Professor Kevin Fong, who was helping to judge the competition:
“It’s great to see them working so well in teams with a lot of applied science and even engineering. So hopefully we have some budding rocket scientists here."
There were four full surviving eggs, which will be examined and judged on the four criteria and then a winner will be announced in assembly on Monday. The winners of an eggstra competition, for which each team had to come up with their best egg pun, will also be announced in assembly.
Whichever House is announced winner, all teams agreed that it was an eggcellent competition.
