Routledge Books have published a new edition of The State of Independence, an update on the best-selling title co-edited by Head of Alleyn's Jane Lunnon.

Originally published in 2019, and developed with co-editor Dr David James, Deputy Head at Bryanston School, the book explores the landscape that independent schools inhabit today.

Mrs Lunnon said: "It is part of the Alleyn's DNA to constantly be curious, and to help lead and shape discussions that give rise to debate, inspiration and new ideas! In that vein I'm excited to see the publication of this new edition, complete with such pertinent insights from a range of educational leaders. Sincere thanks to all who have contributed to it, including my co-editor Dr James, and to all the friends, colleagues and students who have inspired me along the way."

The book explores the most significant challenges facing independent schools today, and asks leading figures from education, economics, politics, philosophy and the arts to give their views on how independent schools can adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

Commentators such as Claire Fox, Andy Homden and Katharine Birbalsingh consider aspects such as the upward trend of educating international students, the extent to which independent schools have echoed societal movements towards greater access, diversity and gender fluidity, and provide first-hand insight into the experiences of staff, pupils and parents involved in the everyday functioning and longer-term development of the independent sector.
