Aidan Sproat-Clements joins the Senior Management Team at Alleyn’s as Director of Studies, and he will be working alongside the other Assistant Heads to promote academic extension, scholarship and to develop learning at Alleyn’s beyond the curriculum. He joins us from Wellington College, where he served as Head of Maths for eleven years, and prior to that he taught at Westminster School. In addition to teaching, he has written textbooks for the IB’s Middle Years Programme and helped the IB to develop electronic examinations.

Mr Sproat-Clements read Mathematics and Music at Trinity College, Cambridge, and has given talks on a wide range of subjects including the mathematics of piano tuning and origins of number systems. In addition, he is a keen quizzer… members of the school community who are fans of “Only Connect” may recognise him!

“A lot of people think about education as the delivery of content, but I think it’s far more important to remember that education is about developing passion”, says Sproat-Clements  “I’ve been fortunate that my own education gave me the opportunity to discover and to develop my passions, and that the schools in which I have taught have also seen this as a priority both for staff and students. Joining Alleyn’s – where joy, creativity, rigour and inspiration are the pillars upon which the academic pediment rests – has given me an extraordinary platform from which to explore how we can continue to develop the way in which we inspire every member of our community – staff, students, parents and alumni.”

In welcoming Mr Sproat-Clements to this new role, Head Mrs Lunnon says, “Only connect” – I have quoted this abbreviation from Forster’s resonating edict in Howard’s end: “only connect the prose and the passion” many times in my life, to reflect the transformative power of bringing things together. I am certain that the combination of Aidan Sproat-Clements and Alleyn’s School will be similarly exciting – and not just because he is a hugely accomplished, highly musical, erudite and engaging mathematician who also made it to the semi-final of BBC 2's fiendish quiz programme “Only Connect”. We are looking forward to his work to lead and develop scholarship and intellectual inquiry in the school; I have no doubt he will do it with great flair.”
