Year 6 visited the Houses of Parliament as an introduction to this important topic and to learn about how Parliament works. We all went on a tour of this beautiful building and stood in the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the large Westminster Hall, which is 900 years old. They enjoyed looking at and learning about such an ornate and impressive building and were keen to see the sniffer dogs who were arriving to check the House of Commons before the MPs started their debate. Unfortunately, they didn’t see the spaniels but they saw some Lords working and having meetings! The children asked many interesting questions and impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

After the tour, the children attended a workshop where they learnt in detail about the process of making a law.  The year group was divided into two and one group discussed creating a law to introduce installing special microchips in cars and roads that would cause speeding cars to automatically slow down. The second group debated the introduction of a 5% tax on the use of plastic.  Children took on the roles of Prime Minster, and the Speaker of the House of Commons and the debates were loud, opinionated and fascinating. It was a very interesting and educational morning.

The children were very impressive with their thoughts and opinions.  Maybe there is a future politician amongst them!
