Senior School News

Some excellent news to share as our Upper School students Eleanor (Y13) and Samuel (Y12) put on a phenomenal performance to win the South London French Debating Competition!

Both Ellie and Sam represented Alleyn’s superbly throughout an academically rigorous and highly enriching experience for them both. Our students competed against St Mary's Ascot and Trinity School in round 1, then against Emmanuel School and St Mary's Ascot again in round 2, and finally beating Old Palace School in the final.

The motion for the final was 'Il faut privatiser le service de santé pour améliorer la qualité des soins'. The teams tossed a coin to decide the side of argument they would present. We drew to argue against the motion and Sam and Ellie argued brilliantly to secure overall victory.

As victors, they have earned a place in the national final of the Joutes Oratoires Lycéennes in March. Presented by the Institut Français and Francophonie UK, the final concludes months of French debating competitions involving hundreds of sixth form students from across the UK.

Colleagues were incredibly impressed with our students' teamwork, clarity of argument and high level of French throughout the evening. Sam and Ellie put a lot of research and prep into the evening and it really paid off. Notably, competitor schools commented on how well our students listened to the counter arguments and responded directly to points of debate spontaneously and confidently.

We are very proud of them both and look forward to the excitement of the Joutes Oratoires in March!
