Mark Stevens (B 1971-78) remembers the school shop. The shop was opened in 1920 and it had an arrangement whereby the school had a percentage of the profits. From 1929, the shop became the School’s ‘very own’. Every item sold in the school shop was stated to be cheaper than elsewhere and all profits were to be returned to the School in one form or another.

During the Second World War, the shop even travelled to Kent, where Alleyn’s was evacuated, to ensure that pupils were properly kitted out. In the EAM of November 1939, the shop aimed to give the best possible service…. The Manager visits Maidstone every Tuesday and Deal every Wednesday to take orders. Other days the Shop is open at the School’. The pricelist shown appeared in the EAM of June 1940. The school shop no longer runs and pupils get their uniform and sports kit from Peter Jones or schoolblazer, an online ‘webshop’.
