Sharon O’Connor, the secretary of the Alleyn’s Parents’ Association, nominated the Rev William Rogers (1819-96). She explains that ‘he was an energetic social reformer particularly devoted to education. He took a leading part in the reconstruction of Dulwich College and the formation of Alleyn’s School and was chairman of the Governors of Dulwich College for 34 years.’ His book Reminiscences, published in 1888, describes his life and in it he mentions his gratification at the secure establishment of Alleyn’s School in 1882, as he said it was destined to play a ‘still greater part in the work of middle class education’,  a cause dear to his own heart. To find out more about Rev Rogers, read this article which appeared in the Dulwich Society Journal, autumn 2011.
