The School has a collection of photographic portraits of many of the 264 Alleyn’s Old Boys (AOBs) who were killed in the First World War. The sepia photographs are mounted in groups of eight on to a large pieces of board. Each photograph has a handwritten inscription identifying the soldier and giving his rank, regiment, age and date of death. On the back of many of the photographs there is additional biographical information about the individual soldier, some with comments written by a member of the AOB’s family.

Susie writes: ‘the boards are historical documents in their own right; the styles of handwriting are varied and breathe the era in which they were written (1920s). To me the photographs represent a community in mourning.’

For many years the photographs were stored in a cabinet of drawers outside the Headmaster’s Study. The cabinet has long since gone but the photographs remain.
