In 2007 Alleyn’s celebrated a hundred years of having a house-system by holding a dinner at the East India Club, St James’s Square, and producing a commemorative brochure for the centenary. Alleyn’s was a pioneer among day schools in introducing a house-system in 1907. The then headmaster, Mr F Collins, explained: ‘Each House will be independent, and will be largely governed by the boys for the boys, so that powers of organisation and a feeling of responsibility will be developed, qualities which will be of enormous importance to boys in their broader lives as citizens.’ Clare Robertson, Personnel Administrator and whose daughter Kate Anderson was House Captain of Tyson’s in 2004, remarks that it is gratifying to see from the brochure that ‘more 100 years on, the system continues with such strength and success’.
