Lady Butler of Brockwell, School Governor, has nominated Arthur Chandler’s book, Alleyn’s: The Coeducational School, published in 1998. Lady Butler was a teacher at Alleyn’s from 1976-97 and her photograph appears on page 120 of the book. In 1980, she became the School’s first female Housemaster, about which Chandler observed ‘note: not Housemistress’. Lady Butler opted for the Housemastertitle to distinguish from the person who, in her mind ‘dishes out the cough medicine and sews on name tapes’. She remained Brown’s Housemaster until 1986, when she was appointed Senior Mistress [Second Deputy Head], a position Lady Butler retained until her retirement in 1997.
