We were delighted to welcome Sir Jonathan Bate to Alleyn's to deliver the annual Edward Alleyn Lecture, which this year heralds the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of our Founder's School.
Provost of Worcester College and Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, Sir Jonathan delighted the audience with a whistle-stop tour of how the classical world played out on the London stage in the age of Alleyn, through the grammar school education enjoyed by Shakespeare, Marlowe and their fellow dramatists. He illustrated how the playwrights' schooling had immersed them in the literature, history and ideas of classical antiquity, and how they deployed and referenced that learning in various ways. least amongst them was Alleyn's famous line from his role as Dr Faustus: "O lente, lente currite, noctis equi!"
Jonathan's many publications include Shakespeare and Ovid, The Genius of Shakespeare, Soul of the Age: A Biography of the Mind of William Shakespeare, and award-winning biographies of the poets John Clare and Ted Hughes. He edited The RSC Shakespeare: Complete Works. Being Shakespeare, his one-man play for Simon Callow, played three runs in London’s West End and a transfer to New York and Chicago.

Junior School Open Day
The next Alleyn's Junior School Open Event is from 1.30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 22 May 2024. There will be a Head's Talk at 1.40pm after which you will be offered a tour of the school with a pupil. There is no need to book a place at this Open Event - everyone is welcome.
