Our chosen theme for Book Week this year, ‘1918-2018 A Century of Change’, spanned a period of history which has embraced revolutionary change in our world. Our first author visit of the week began with Michaela Morgan’s arrival. Her reading aloud of a selection of poems was very amusing and entertaining, although she did touch upon some more serious themes: war, animals kept in captivity.

Our annual Hat Parade was another entertaining event with the inventiveness, resourcefulness and creativity of all the children on display. The children produced hats at home to represent either historical events or famous people from the last century. We had spectacular array of: Suffragettes, space travellers, computers, televisions, telecommunications, McDonalds, Post-its, Highway Code, antibiotics, the Millennium, the first black USA President, 1966 and all that football… the list was endless.

The author Tom Palmer’s visit to Alleyn’s included him reading extracts from his latest books and talking to the children about the process of writing a book. His theme of war fitted in well with our Book Week. Margaret Bateson Hill was a delightful author for our Infants. She is an incredible storyteller who was able to engage everyone who was lucky enough to listen to her magical tales.  The actress Sylvestra Le Touzel, agreed to be our judge for the House Spoken English competitions. The children chosen to represent their houses performed their own poems based on: The Beano, The RAF, The Suffragettes and the First World War. The Houses performed a selection of light-hearted poems in between the individual performers. It was an entertaining and impressive line-up of budding young poets enjoyed by all.

It was a fantastic Book Week and appropriate for all of us here at Alleyn’s to remind ourselves of just some of those amazing events, people and discoveries from the last century.  Please find a link to the British Legion website here.
