On Thursday 13 September, Year 5 went camping in Hatfield Woods with the Bushcraft Company for the night.  After a swift coach ride there, we arrived and immediately launched straight into our activities. The campfire was already lit and the children were very excited to find out which tent they would be sleeping in.

Our first activity was learning how to play a game called ‘Predator’ which involved hiding behind trees and sneaking up on an unsuspecting prey (Miss Luddington). The children learnt the art of camouflage and stalking and were successful in reaching the ‘prey’! After that, we learnt how to build a campfire using different thicknesses of twigs and sticks, and then we each cooked our own burger over the fire.

Following on from a slightly chargrilled lunch, we did some trapping (again, the aim being to trap the poor teachers). The children were given some rope and wire and designed some very inventive ways of attracting the teachers to their trap! Most seemed to involve coffee and chocolate. Then it was time to have supper and begin the evening activities. We listened to some very spooky, but very funny, stories around the fire and toasted some marshmallows. Then it was time for the most exciting part – sleeping in a tent!

The next morning, our final activity was designing a shelter from wood and other materials found in the forest to keep a piece of bread dry. Our instructors tested each shelter’s effectiveness by pouring a jug of water over it. Some of the bread was less soggy than the others… Year 5 had a wonderful time at Bushcraft!
