After a two-year carol service hiatus due to Covid-19, it was wonderful for the Alleyn’s community to come together for a joyous Christmas Carol Service in Christ’s Chapel on 13 December.

Reverend Liz Lander led the Address, speaking about the unforgettable nature of music and song and their power to move us deeply, which is why a service full of beautiful music can be so stirring. Reverend Lander went onto explain the meaning behind some of the songs.

Readying us for the Christmas break, the congregation enjoyed singing traditional carols including Once in Royal David's City and All O come, all ye faithful. And they heard outstanding performances from our four school choirs; Chamber, Soul, Schola Cantorum and All Star, including renditions of There shall a star from Jacob come forth, Dormi, Jesu and an exuberant rendition of Last Christmas.

Alleyn’s Director of Music, Chris Dearmer summed up the evening:

“The setting was perfect: crisp, cold air outside, snow on the ground, candlelight illuminating the chapel... it was a picture-perfect setting for our final School Carol Service. Our choirs led the service superbly. From Felix Mendelssohn to George Michael, it was a wonderful Alleyn's mix of the traditional and the quirky, full of joy, Christmas spirit and exceptional music-making. Above all, it was joyous to sing Christmas Carols together, with one voice, for the first time in three years. Happy Christmas all!”

There was a collection with donations being made for Under One Sky, a volunteer-led initiative supporting people living on the streets of London through friendship and compassion.

Following the service, the congregation was warmly invited to gather back at the EAB at Alleyn’s for mince pies and mulled wine.
