We are very proud of Aanya in Year 9, (pictured fifth on the right below), who at 13 is the youngest girl ever asked to join the team and represent the UK in the European Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad - the world’s most prestigious female-only maths competition for pre-university students.

The UK team enjoyed enormous success in the competition, placing fifth in the world and third in Europe, beaten only by Russia and Romania.

Aanya is very excited to have secured her first international Olympiad medal and is eagerly awaiting its arrival in the post from this year’s host country, Georgia. She said:

'I very much enjoyed training with, and competing as part of, the national team and felt great pride in representing the UK at an international event.'

Russia and Romania are the ones to beat next time, and while the Russia especially are an extremely strong team, as Mrs Lunnon says, ‘they don’t have Aanya on their side!'

The UK team’s outstanding performance was celebrated in The Guardian this week which challenged readers to solve one of the EGMO qualifying puzzles – try the challenge yourself.
