Several volunteers from Year 6 took part in an assembly celebrating International Women’s Day 2020, which is to be held officially on Sunday 8 March. This year the theme being promoted is #EachforEqual.

The message in assembly was that an equal world was an enabled one in which we all need to play a part together, in forging gender equality. Year 6 considered how we might celebrate women’s and girls' achievements, how will we raise awareness against bias and how we can all, both boys and girls, take action for equality. The school heard how we are all parts of a whole and our individual actions, conversations, behaviours and mindsets can have an impact on our larger society.

Some of the Year 6 children had researched famous women and we heard about Cathy Freeman’s struggle to become a top Olympian despite her gender and race. Tanni Grey Thompson’s achievements and high office as a campaigner for people with disabilities was also described.

The Junior children were invited to make a simple 'Selfie pledge card' stating how they would try to endorse the #EachForEqual caption and these are being displayed in the Exhibition Area. There are several colourful and informative displays celebrating the achievements of women in many fields to be seen in this area. Mrs Reid has a wonderful display of books on this theme in the library and we have been running competitions all week related to this important issue. Interesting articles and videos for older children can be found on the Hub - Home Learning Zone – under ‘Resources’ - IWD 2020.

Inclusivity and equality are at the heart of Alleyn’s Junior school and celebrating this important subject continues to educate and highlight all our children, on the achievements of women.
