Richard Calland, Professor of Public Law at Cape Town University, gives the annual Edward Alleyn Club Lecture, a talk by a distinguished former pupil of Alleyn’s School.

He will talk about the enormous changes in South African politics from Nelson Mandela onward, including the present and future political scene there. He moved to South Africa in 1994 to work on its founding democratic election and has been involved in democratic governance in South Africa since that time through organisations including the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC), the Open Democracy Advice Centre and the Democratic Governance & Rights Unit.

Richard is a prominent political analyst and newspaper columnist in South Africa. His books include Anatomy of South Africa: Who holds the power? (2005), The Zuma Years (2013) and Make or Break: How the next three years will shape South Africa’s next three decades (2016). He practised law for seven years at the London Bar before moving to South Africa and is a Fellow of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
