What a fantastic evening of music, community, and celebration as we came together for the Joint Foundation Schools’ Concert in the beautiful Vaughan Williams Auditorium at James Alleyn’s Girls’ School (JAGS) on Sunday 22nd September. It was an evening to remember, as pupils from JAGS, Dulwich College, and Alleyn’s School showcased their talents, performing for parents, staff, and friends. After a six-year hiatus, the magic of live music was back in full force – and it did not disappoint!

This concert was a triumphant return to collaboration, one that celebrated not just the present but also a rich heritage dating back to the schools’ shared foundation by Edward Alleyn. It was a unique occasion that brought the community together and reminded us of the powerful role that music has played, and continues to play, in shaping the spirit of these schools.

The programme featured a stellar line-up, both literally and metaphorically! The audience were treated to selections from Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’, complimented by Pete Long’s jazz reimaginings in ‘The Jazz Planets.’ These pieces, full of energy, innovation, and emotion, took us on a journey from the classical to the contemporary, reflecting both the timelessness and evolution of music at the three schools.

In addition to these cosmic performances, we also heard a stirring rendition of "A Fancy of Folksongs" by Cecilia McDowall, a work that beautifully blended traditional folk influences with modern harmonies, performed by the combined choirs and orchestras of the three schools. This was not just a concert, but a true celebration of the musical talent that

The event also served as a reminder of the important role that music plays in our education and our community. It is a language that transcends age, background, and even time, connecting us to each other and to the rich history of our schools.

A heartfelt congratulations goes out to the Music Departments of JAGS, Dulwich College, and Alleyn’s School for organising such a brilliant concert. After six years apart, it was a joy to see and hear the results of their hard work. The evening was an overwhelming success, and the performances reminded us all why music remains such an essential and vibrant part of school life.

We look forward to many more collaborations in the future, as we continue to build on this tradition of musical excellence.
