Despite the allure of some half term break rest and relaxation, a group of Alleyn’s cadets, along with a handful of pupils, have opted for a slightly different path, heading to the Peak District for CCF Adventure Training.

Throughout the week, they have been engaging in physical activities designed to cultivate endurance, self-reliance, responsibility, and leadership, all while enjoying themselves and escaping life in the city.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Peak District's rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, picturesque villages, and explorable valleys, the cadets have ample opportunities to explore the outdoors.

CSgt Stevens says of the trip: ‘I think for the kids you’ve got to give them a taste of different wild adventures. At the CCF, we aren’t educators of education, we are educators of life’. What better way to activate this zest for life and the outdoors than to take cadets to an area like the Peak District.

Adventure Training puts cadets through various activities: on Monday, they explored the Bagshawe Caverns, a disused mine that features unique geological formations, mining history and some very narrow passageways and crawl spaces. Tuesday saw them honing their climbing, abseiling, and belaying skills on Burbage North. Wednesday involved canoeing and raft building, Thursday will take the pupils for a full day mountain hike with navigation training, and on Friday they will be gorge walking.

Even though it is half term break, academic life and school commitments continue to occupy the pupils’ minds, with casual conversation topics ranging from sports and revision to language classes and extracurricular activities. Some cadets even take advantage of the limited downtime for quiet study sessions.

While the academic and school thought train might not stop, during activities, the cadets are engaged, eager to get stuck in and absorb the lessons that each activity offers.

It’s a lot of fun and learning here at Adventure Training, and to see our young cadets grow and learn through their experiences in the outdoors is certainly priceless.
