Pupils in Year 2 have an exciting few days ahead, with the arrival of their class chicks which started hatching this morning. In a very hands-on learning experience, the children have been carefully doting on 10 fertilised chicken eggs, dutifully preparing and learning about them since the start of term.

As part of the Year 2 science topic, ‘Animals, including humans’ is a unit on lifecycles. 2A had a vote on what animal life cycle they would like to learn about, and they chose to learn about a chicken’s life cycle.

Learning about the life cycle of chickens provides an opportunity for pupils to understand how the common chook develops from a humble egg to a full-fledged adult. The children have actively engaged with caring for the eggs throughout the incubation and hatching process, all the while developing a sense of curiosity and wonder.

By witnessing the miracle of life through egg hatching, a greater appreciation for nature develops, and helps pupils connect with agriculture and understand food production.

It's been one holistic learning experience that has spanned beyond the traditional classroom instruction at Alleyn’s. Once all hatched, the chicks will be safely returned to The Happy Chick Company, who kindly provided them, albeit after a few sorrowful goodbyes from our children. Until then, the other infant classes (and possibly juniors too) will have the opportunity to visit the chicks, and maybe even hold them!
