The tempestuous weather on Tuesday afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for the culminating Year 13 Bear Pit event focused on spoken word.

It was a lunchtime of superb poetry, with original verse from students with powerful voices sharing words which need to be heard. This, mixed in with Hanif Abdurraqib, some Christmassy Gatsby and a tribute to the magnificent Benjamin Zephaniah created a wonderful way to spend a rainy lunchtime.

Some students shared their personal musings on the contradictory and sometimes tumultuous experience of adolescence, grappling with the challenges of supporting friends in times of difficulty.

India eloquently encapsulated the essence in her poignant line, 'Your life is full of seasons.' Yet, cautioned against hastily melting away the metaphorical snow, lest it causes rain.

Mr. Piper then took the floor, sharing a compelling excerpt from 'The Great Gatsby,' narrating Nick's journey home after becoming disenchanted with life in the East. The imagery drew parallels to Mr. Piper's own train journeys during the holidays, offering a fitting conclusion to the spoken word. The protagonist's struggle with self-identity and belonging resonated, transcending the boundaries of adolescence to encapsulate the broader human condition.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Piper emphasized the importance of speaking one's truth and urged students never to let their voices be silenced—a powerful reminder for all.
