In a turn of events that can only be described as a “toilet triumph,” the Student Council has successfully lobbied for, and engaged in, the redesign and modernisation of Alleyn’s pupil restrooms. After months of consultation—and a few too many lavatory-based puns — the Council’s collaborative work with Senior Leaders has paid off. Pupils were greeted today by a set of sparkling new toilets that feature modern designs, smart technology, clean lines and a plethora of standalone single bathrooms.

Our pupils are the pulse of the school; it is vital that our student body representatives are able to voice their ideas and actively participate in the life of their school. Their campaign sits alongside other successes including a trial of key card activated lockers and improvements to dining arrangements implemented in January.

What began as a simple suggestion in a council meeting quickly gained momentum as pupils shared their hopes and dreams of first-class facilities. “These set of bathrooms are part of the original school building, so we wanted to honour that, but at the same time there is no need for them to be ‘time capsules from the 1970s,’” said Jane Lunnon, Head. “We are thrilled that the renovation work became a collaborative project with our pupil leaders.”

The school’s senior leadership listened attentively to the pupils' concerns and invited them to consult on design with the Chief Operating Officer, Guy Collins-Down. "We realised that, if we wanted pupils to be confident and happy during the school day, they needed to feel comfortable everywhere in the school—including the bathrooms," he said.

The newly renovated facilities are already a hit. “It’s like stepping into a whole new world,” said one thrilled student. “I actually don’t mind spending time in there anymore—though not too much time, of course!”

In the end, this success story is proof that pupils’ voice matters and can support positive change.  And as for the toilets, they’ve gone from being outdated and a little shabby to a point of pride—proof that every flush was worth the fuss.
