The month of May burst into life with a brilliant Orchestral and Choral concert in the stunning surrounds of Southwark Cathedral.

Many months of hard work and preparation went into making the night a success, with the musicians dedicating countless hours of practice and learning, carefully refining their craft to take to the stage and showcase Alleyn’s Music. Equally committed, the music department devoted hours of time and expertise to coaching and supporting the musicians in their endeavours, with the fruits of their labour evident at the concert.

The Symphony Orchestra started the evening with a very ambitious and polished rendition of Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans. Surrounded by her fellow musicians, the ever-graceful Hailey W then took to the stage with Cello concerto 4th Mvt by Edward Elgar. Moving, elegant and supremely refined, the tone was set for an evening of striking performances.

From there, the Symphony Orchestra, co-led by Anna G and Izzy S, took centre stage to deliver a stirring rendition of Peer Gynt Suite 1 by Edvard Greig, an act enhanced by the presence of conductor Mr. Fish, who returned from sabbatical for the special occasion.

Next, Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Mr. Beatty, enchanted the audience with Anton Bruckner’s Christus Factus Est and Haec Dies by William Byrd, before embarking on the incredibly intricate Allemande by Caroline Shaw, with the musicians showcasing their deep appreciation for musical subtleties under Mr. Beatty's expert guidance.

The Chamber Orchestra opened the second half with a majestic performance of Janacek’s Suite for String Orchestra, led by our highly experienced Head of Strings, Ms. Doley. The string playing was of a professional level.

The Chamber Choir, led by Miss Polly May, Director of Music at Alleyn’s, brought the evening to a magnificent close with their rendition of Bach's Magnificat, with step out solos for many of the choir, accompanied by the students in the Bach Orchestra, leaving the audience in awe.

Reflecting on the evening, Miss May expressed her admiration for the performers’ exceptional musicianship, describing the concert as a testament to their talent and dedication.

'I have been totally bowled over by the astonishing levels of musicianship displayed by our students. The concert on Wednesday night was such an impressive culmination of their efforts over the years.’.

It truly is an honour to have such a wide number of passionate performers involved in the Alleyn’s music programme. Our musicians and the whole music department exude levels of dedication, talent and beauty that are beyond brilliant and we continue to leave performances like these with a glint in our eye, totally in awe of the magic that is Alleyn’s.
