The European Day of Languages is a chance to celebrate the thousands of languages spoken around the world, encourage language learning and have some multilingual fun!

Our Junior School celebrations started with a language-themed assembly and our pupils saying "Hello, speak to me" in French, German, Greek, Italian and Mandarin. We had a fun language quiz and sang a European song in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. We watched a French play by Year 6 pupils about two inventors who had created two robots and a French sketch by Year 3 about not wanting to wake up in the morning. What a way to begin our Day of Languages!

At lunchtime we had a famous International Lunch in the Dining Hall. The menu included fajitas, Italian meatballs and Chinese noodles and we had a tasting table with delights such as sausages from around the world, Parma ham, different cheeses and olives.

After enjoying that wonderful lunch, we were really fortunate to have so many parent volunteers visit us to teach us different languages and celebrate different cultures. The experiences ranged from Brazilian Portuguese music and Turkish paper marbling to writing names in Chinese.

The afternoon continued the celebrations with our first bilingual meet-up of the year, where Junior School children met with their Senior School counterparts. This took place in the Lower School where more than 50 Junior School pupils enjoyed playing board games whilst speaking their home language with Senior School students. It was an amazing sight to see and hear all of the conversation in many languages including Mandarin, Arabic, Greek, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Hindi and Russian.

Thank you to all of the parents, catering staff and also School staff and pupils who put so much effort into making this a wonderful Day of Languages.
